Coca-Cola announced that it will launch its first alcoholic drink in the company’s 125-year history.
The product will be exclusively available in Japan and will compete in a category known as Chu-Hi, a canned drink with an alcohol content that ranges between 3 and 8 percent.
“We haven’t experimented in the low alcohol category before, but it’s an example of how we continue to explore opportunities outside our core areas,” Jorge Garduño, President of Coca-Cola’s Japan Business Unit, said recently on the company’s website.
Coca-Cola also owns Georgia Coffee in Japan, which it claims is the world’s highest-grossing canned coffee drink, generating more than $1 billion in sales annually.
The company has not yet released details on the new product’s name or when it will be released.
