The theme of this year’s Earth Day is #InvestInOurPlanet because “a green future is a prosperous future,” the organization cites on its website.
Since 1970, Earth Day has engaged nearly 200 countries and mobilized one billion individuals to take action. This year, the global movement is igniting change with its Earth Day Climate Action Summit that’s focusing on offering key solutions that will help deliver the greenhouse gas reductions needed by 2030 to meet the Paris Agreement.
For many of today’s youngest consumer brands, sustainability isn’t just a priority, it’s a brand mantra. To celebrate Earth Day, we’re highlighting some sustainable, emerging consumer brands — all of which are SKU alums — that are creating positive change in their respective industries and in the world at large.
Mushroom Revival
Mushroom Revival is on a mission to revive health with functional mushrooms so you can go back to feeling your best self. In honor of Earth Day, the functional mushroom company is planting 10,000 trees in the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest with the partnership of One Tree Planted.
Raven & Lily
Austin, Texas-based Raven & Lily offers sustainable, handcrafted accessories made by skilled artisans from around the world. As a certified B Corp and member of the Fair Trade Federation, the company plans to celebrate Earth Day in-store at Neighborhood Goods with the launch of the Remnant Leather Collection, which uses repurposed pieces of leather that would otherwise go to waste.
American Provenance
Launched in 2015, American Provenance has long understood that the industry’s reliance on plastic packaging is unsustainable and that’s why they’re part of the change. This year, the company has been a leader in the deodorant industry by reformulating deodorant tubes and caps to contain 60 percent post-consumer recycled plastic. American Provenance is also committed to rolling out aluminum bottles and jars for all its products moving forward. Not only is aluminum infinitely recyclable, but 75 percent of all aluminum ever produced is still in use today.
SHAZ & KIKS
Haircare brand SHAZ & KIKS is reimagining ancient Indian rituals by focusing on Ayurvedic ingredients and practices to create holistic haircare from root to tip. The company works with CleanHub to collect plastic waste in Edvanna, India before it can enter the most precious ecosystem on earth: the ocean. So far, SHAZ & KIKS has offset its plastic usage and recovered 500 lbs of ocean-bound plastic. Through CleanHub, they partner with Green Worms plastic waste collected by women’s self-help groups (also creating critical employment opportunities). The waste is then sorted into recyclables and non-recyclables. The recyclables are sold at local scrap markets (to encourage a circular economy), while the non-recyclables are co-processed by Geocycle, which means the mineral materials are recycled while recovering energy all through a single industrial process.
Blenders & Bowls
Austin’s favorite smoothie bowls are no longer exclusive to their Texas cafes. Since launching in 2010, Blenders & Bowls is now a nationwide sensation offering frozen smoothie bowls in pint-sized packages. The brand also offers merchandise that’s reflective of the company’s adventurous and colorful spirit. To celebrate Earth Day, the team will be participating in Austin’s Earth Day Clean Up.
