“If you do not jump out of bed excited to make that day’s progress, you need to make changes until you are,” Grant Gyesky told us when we asked him to share some insights about his journey launching nitro cold brew coffee brand RISE Brewing Co. alongside childhood friends, co-founders Jarrett McGovern and Justin Weinstein, and co-founder Hudson Gaines-Ross.
We checked in with him to discover how he likes to Start It Sunday and learn why he feels sad for people who get excited for Friday.
ForceBrands: What does your Sunday routine look like (ie: do you prep for the week ahead)?
Grant Gyesky: There are two main things that I do on Sunday for work. The first is to review and finalize my calendar for the week. It is always funny to me how four or five one-sentence emails will come in on Sunday afternoon from people doing the same thing. I guess it is a common practice to email on Sunday and it allows me to not feel like the week will lose control when I have a solid mental understanding of my schedule — including time blocked out for emails and exercise. I also have two children with one more on the way. I make sure to spend the entire day engaged with them as I do not get to spend as much time as I would like with them during the week. I find it important to know that I did not hold back loving them over the weekend so I don’t feel any guilt during the week.
FB: How do you approach the start of each work week?
GG: I try and schedule Monday mornings for personal computer time. This allows me to feel like I am in control from the beginning of the week. I try and stack meetings for two days during the week so that there is less interruption for the rest of the week.
FB: What are some tips for motivating on Monday?
GG: I saw someone wearing a t-shirt the other day that said, “It is almost Friday.” I had a very real sense of sadness for him. If there is a real distinction of your happiness between Monday through Friday and Saturday and Sunday, you may want to seriously consider changing your career.
Not only are you spending 5/7 of your time unhappy, but you will never excel in something that does not spark passion. If you can be equally as excited about Monday as you are Saturday then your life is in a balance that will lead to success.
